Description:Ichinotani Futaba Gunki (The Chronicles of the Battle of Ichinotani) is a historical play based on the battle that took place on the cost of Ichinotani. Kumiuchi (Grappling by the Shores of Suma Bay) is a particular battle scene between two warriors, Kumagai Jiro Naozane, a commander of the Genji clan, and Taira-no Atsumori, a descendant of the noble Heike clan. It is a famous moment when Atsumori rides on horseback into the waves following the Heike clan that are escaping on boats, and Kumagai rides after him, raising his battle fan and challenges him to fight. Both Atsumori and Kumagai are in their armor and battle cloak, and a Genji warrior, Hirayama-no Mushadokoro, suspicious about Kumagai, spies on them behind a tree. The elaborate ships do not appear in the actual kabuki play, but they are colorfully depicted in this picture adding dynamics to the scene. Due to the popularity of this particular Kumiage Dourou-e, the publication year was scratched off and re-printed.
