The mask of a female deity, Zō-onna is used for the Moon Maiden in Hagoromo, the daughter of the Dragon King in Ama, and a shinto deity in Kazuragi and Miwa. The expression is more remote than that of other young women's masks. Zō-onna has thinner cheeks, a non-smiling mouth, down-turned eyes, and sparse, high painted eyebrows. The iconography of hair strands requires two strands at the part, three crossing them at the temples, and then three descending down the cheeks. The model for this mask is said to have been created by the 15th century dengaku player Zōami and is adeptly recreated here by Otsuki Kōkun. (MB)
