Commentary Mizugoromo 水衣 are all-purose over jackets worn by men and women commoners, by priests and lay people. Striped mizugoromo like the one shown here would be worn by Yamabushi priests, while plain-color brown or blue would be suitable for traveling monks. The loose open weave with dislodged wefts of the yore mizugoromo suggests the rags of the destitute 100-year old woman or the simple life of the hunter or fisher. (MB)
