Commentary The nō kariginu 狩衣 developed out of a robe by the same name worn by aristocrats. The round collar, double-width sleeves and cords laced through the cuffs are its salient features. This kariginu is lined and might be worn by a minister, a deity, or a Chinese official. The gold supplementary patterning stands out on the dark blue ground. Large, leafy paulownia flowers bending left and right are interspersed with small squares filled with symbols like Buddhist swastikas, butterflies and tomoe. (MB)
