Large Dōji. Dōji is a mask representing a young boy with the fairy-like quality of eternal youth. In contrast, the Large Dōji seen here has a menacing expression and might be used for such plays as Ōeyama where Dōji later turns out to be a demon. The thin bangs fly about in disarray. Thick eyebrows swerve upwards reinforcing the sharply slanted eyes with round eyeballs. The mouth retains the youthful smile typical of the standard Dōji, but the row of lower teeth suggest a malicious intent. [MB]
