Commentary A nuihaku 縫箔 is an embroidered and stenciled kosode-style garment that can be worn either as an undergarment and outer garment. Although typically associated with women's wear, young men can also wear nuihaku under broad-sleeved jackets. Here, blank areas of white in the ground separate irregularly shaped patterns stenciled in gold and silver of linked hexagons enclosing flowers. Over these large gold or silver snowflakes have been embroidered with designs of various flowers. Scattered around the snowflakes are oversized embroidered dandelions. The waist area lacks embellishment as it would be bound with a sash.(MB)
