Commentary A surihaku 刷箔 is a kosode-cut nō undergarment. It features stencil designs done in metallic foil, usually gold or silver, or a combination of both, as seen here. Because the surihaku is worn under other garments, only the upper half exposed. As a result, the decoration is often denser above and abbreviated below. Here a jagged line reminiscent of pine bark (matsukawa bishi) delineates the blank lower half from the upper portion filled with the lyrical imagery of snow-laden grasses. (MB)
