Commentary The white faced mask of a happy old man used in noh and festival performances of ritual performance of Shikisanban, also known as Okina. Otsuki Kōkun's Hakushiki-jō is an exemplary piece. Deep wrinkles line the forehead, circling around to meet rounded wrinkles on the cheeks. The crescent-shaped slit eyes brim with mirth, and the thin lips with painted mustache smile gently. The separate chin (kiriago) is attached by means of hemp cords passed through holes in the upper and lower jaw. The beard is made of horse's mane and implanted into the wooden mask. The eyebrows are indicated by pompoms made of hemp that are glued on.The black horizontal strip at the upper edge of the mask indicates the line where the mask meets the black lacquer Okina eboshi hat worn in performance.
