Commentary Noshime 熨斗目 are plain weave kosode worn mostly by men of less exalted rank, such as priests, servants, and samurai under matched suits, but are sometimes also worn by women. Noshime can be a single color, or have broad horizontal stripes of two or three colors, or checks, or a waist area of contrasting color as seen in the example. Some have small kasuri patterns in areas. The plain weave is sometimes given textural variation by incorporating warps at different tensions, resulting in puckers. (MB)
