Commentary A maiginu 舞衣 (literally "dancing cloak") is a broad-sleeved (ōsode) noh costume of gossamer fabric, like the ribbed gauze weave shown here. Rows of flower sprigs on wooden rafts woven into the gauze as gold supplementary patterning. The motifs rise to the right and left in alternate rows. Maiginu differ from the chōken in having front lapels that are crossed and belted so that while the sleeves sway freely with the dance, the body of the garment is bound snugly to the performer's torso. Shamens, shrine priestesses, and other women characters who perform long instrumental dances wear maiginu. (MB)
