| Commentary | A chōken 長絹 is a broad-sleeved (ōsode 大袖) noh costume with open cuffs and loose body panels. The gossamer weave, here a gauze weave (sha), typifies women's "dancie cloaks" and is worn as an outer robe for roles of women and children in plays containing a long instrumental dance. Bound at the waist it can be used to dress male aristocrats and warrior-courtiers. This chōken from the Tokyo National Museum collection has a typical design that combines three large motifs across the upper part of the sleeves and runs over the seams. Scattered paulownia leaves with flowers rising from them serve as small motifs in the lower portion. (MB) | |||||||
