解説

平安後期に流行した「紺紙金字法華経」の典型的な作品のひとつ。表紙は宝相華唐草文で飾られ、見返しの上部にも金銀泥で釈迦説法図が描かれる。その下の部分には法華経の「譬喩品」から取られた二つの情景が並べられている。左には悪鳥や悪虫とともに火宅で戯れる子どもたちが、そして右には彼らが火を逃れて長者と面会する様子が羊車・鹿車・牛車を背景に写し取られている。一般には長者は釈迦、子どもたちは衆生、火宅は迷いに満ちた娑婆世界、そして羊車・鹿車・牛車はそれぞれ声聞・縁覚・菩薩の三乗を表すと考えられている。端正な和様の筆致、また絵の出来映えを考慮すると、十二世紀後半に書写されたのであろう。「紺紙金字法華経」の優れた作品のひとつである。 This is a typical example of ‘konshi kin-ji hokekyo(紺紙金字法華経),’ the Lotus Sutra in gold on dark blue paper that came into fashion during the late Heian period. The title page is decorated with an particular arabesque pattern called ‘hosoge(宝相華),’ while at the upper part of the frontispiece is depicted the picture of Shakyamuni preaching. The lower part of the frontispiece shows the two scenes from the ‘Similes and Parable Chapter’: the one in the left is the burning house in which children are enjoying themselves with various evil birds and insects, and in the right these children are now out of the fire, facing their wealthy father with carriages of sheep, deer and ox. It is said that the wealthy father represents Shakyamuni, children ordinary people, the burning house the world of delusion, and the three carriages drawn by a sheep, deer and ox signify the three vehicles of voice-hearer(声聞), realisation(縁覚), and bodhisattva(菩薩).<br> Taking into account the elegant brushwork of wayo (和様: Japanese style) and fine workmanship of the picture, it is inferred that this piece was produced in the first half of the 12th century, one of the outstanding examples of the Lotus Sutra in gold on dark blue paper.<br><br><br>（表紙）金銀泥宝相華唐草文（見返し）金銀泥釈迦説法図
