組解説:"Story of Oshichi and Kichisaburo" (Yaoya Oshichi / 八百屋お七) is one of the best-known stories by Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693), one of the most brilliant poets and novelists of the Edo period, and part of his novel "Five Passionate Lovers" (好色一代女, Kōshoku Ichidai Onna), in which he portrays "the floating world". Hence the name of the genre to which this novel is ascribed, Ukiyo-zōshi or "books of the floating world", gallant stories and passionate loves that defied social conventions by bringing tragic endings to their protagonists.
