Map Notes:
(Walter:) The map of the Pacific was added to the Theatrum in 1589 [N.B. correct should be 1590.] Asia and America are still farther apart than on the map of Tartary (cat. no 11 E), but Japan now clearly belongs to Asia. The form resembles the so-called crescent- or shrimp-shaped form (cf. cat. nos. 12, 13). As a whole fewer place-names are given than in cat. nos 11C-11F, though the port “Muro” (Murotsu) and the associated region of “Fiongo” (Hy?go) appear for the first time. The large “Isla de Plata” (Silver Island) north of Honsh? is probably based less on early knowledge of Ezo (Hokkaid?) than it is on wishful thinking inspired by Marco Polo. (v.d.Broecke:) . . .this map is based on Mercator’s world map which appeared in 1569, with details from some 25 Portuguese manuscript maps of Bartolomeo de Lasso which Plancius possessed and later used for his own world map (Meurer p. 36, 216).
