This map was first included in the 1570 edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Identification of specific edition awaits removal of map from frame.
(Walter:) The depiction of Japan is similar to that on the map of Asia (cat. no. 11C), but here it has a clear east-west orientation. The reference to the name Zipangri used by Marco Polo is noteworthy. It is also interesting that Japan is equally distant from Asia and America, which are separated only by the ügStretto di Anianüh (Strait of Anian).
